The Learning Resource Center offers research instruction sessions by faculty request to help your students do the research required for their assignments in your course. All sessions are tailored according to the learning objectives and goals of your assignment, but examples of topics covered are as follows:
The following best practices make for the most meaningful outcomes for the students.
1. Research instruction sessions must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance.
2. Course assignments and/or the syllabus should be provided at the time of scheduling
3. We offer general library instruction sessions, but we prefer most instruction sessions to correspond to an assignment or project in the course. If you do not have an assignment, we are happy to work with you to design one. Or, consider the information literary assignment sites below.
We need your help! No one knows better than you do what materials your students might need to support their coursework. Please let us know of any books or other materials you think the library should buy to support instruction in your field. We're also happy to buy materials that are of personal interest as well, within reason.
Suggest Purchases for the Library - Please email or call your Librarian, Jeannette Glover at jeannette.glover@src.edu or 309-649-6603 to suggest a purchase. We hope to develop a form in the future that will make giving a suggestion easier.
Niche Academy is an online learning platform that helps academic libraries show their direct contribution to student success through the ability to easily measure student learning outcomes. Niche Academy allows the Librarian to deliver library instruction at the point-of-need and allows us to embed video tutorials within Canvas, where you can assign these tutorials as a part of regular course materials. Tutorials can even be pre-assigned to free up classroom time for more in-depth conversations and troubleshooting.
This tool is essential for those faculty who desire to have an in-person library instruction session but does not have the class time available to invite the librarian into the classroom or, who wants to learn more about library services and share these tutorials with their students.
The SRC Learning Resource Center also offers the Embedded Librarian program.
What is an Embedded Librarian?
An embedded librarian is a librarian that is integrated into an online class for a period of time to support the students in their research process.
Why do I need an embedded librarian?
The library has increased the number of electronic resources that can be accessed remotely. But having the resources is not enough. Many students have difficulties and need help, not only accessing resources remotely, but knowing what resources and services are available to them. An embedded librarian will provide support for these students in their virtual space.
What can the embedded librarian do for your class?
How to Request an Embedded Librarian
Are you tired of getting essays and research projects from your students that are full of unreliable sources? Don't have the time to teach information literacy in your class? Let the friendly, knowledgeable librarian at the SRC Learning Resource Center do it for you! Contact your librarian, Jeannette Glover by phone or email: 309-649-6603 or jeannette.glover@src.edu
We currently create LibGuides for every research instruction session we teach and embedded class, but you could also have us create them for courses for which we do not provide face-to-face or online instruction. If your students already have the basic skills, but you want a curated list of databases to be available to them in their course space in Canvas, just let us know. To see what a LibGuide looks like: check out our current guides.
You can put textbooks or other course readings, movies, or music on reserve for your students, physically in the LRC. [We are working on creating an electronic reserve system so that we will be able to put materials online for all students to access as needed.]
Any books, DVDs, or other resources that the library purchases for you or your course will be placed in the Faculty Reserves area and only available to be checked out by Faculty unless otherwise specified.
