Learning Outcomes

By the end of this class, you will be able to:

  • Find and use relevant databases
  • Find current and reputable sources
  • Discover and develop good search terms
  • Properly cite your sources

Why Use Library Databases?

Search Bar Icons - Download Free Vector Icons | Noun Project

  • Purchased by libraries for student/faculty/staff/public use
  • Content is evaluated for authority and accuracy, and is licensed for electronic distribution
  • Information is stable
  • Organized and indexed by professionals so the content can be accessed and updated
  • Can search by keywords, specific subject headings and other descriptors
  • Can search in specific fields such as author and title
  • Can limit search results

Why Can't I Google It?

Why not just use Google for your research projects?

  • Often more time consuming than using library databases
  • First few results are from commercial sites or Wikipedia
  • Sometimes hard to establish the authority of the site
  • You will miss out on the 'good' stuff

Library & LRC Services

Reference: The LRC Librarian offers reference services to all students. If you need help with your assignments, research, picking a topic, etc., your Librarian can help! You can make an appointment or walk-in for a face-to-face meeting, email, call, etc.

Interlibrary Loan: If you can't find what you want in the SRC Library, ILL services are offered to all students, staff, and faculty with a library card. Through ILL we find the books and articles you are looking for.

Tutoring: The LRC in both Canton and Macomb provides assistance to help students "catch up" and improve their study skills so that they can complete their course successfully. Our peer tutors are carefully selected students who are faculty recommended and have successfully completed the courses in which they tutor and enjoy working with other students.

Online Tutoring: Online tutoring is available for students who cannot access tutoring at one of the Learning Resource Centers due to distance, time or availability of tutors. Students may connect with an online tutor via the "Online Tutoring" link in the left menu of any Canvas course site. Writing tutoring assistance is available.
