An Instructor's Guide to Accessibility

This guide provides the 'why' and 'how' of accessibility of instruction

graphic about accessibilityIntroduction

Students bring a wide variety of visual, hearing, cognitive, physical and communication abilities to learning. Making your course materials accessible is critical for students to use screen readers and other assistive devices that help them to access content without barriers.

Applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to your teaching can help create new habits for ensuring that your course development is taking into consideration the various learning abilities of others. The below section focuses on what you CAN do to ensure your course design is inclusive and accessible to all students.

Learn more by clicking on Universal Design for Learning in the left menu.

This guide will help you to complete these essential steps for making your course materials accessible:

STEP 1: Make Your Syllabus Accessible
Use the SRC master syllabus template for your course. This document is an accessible document provided by the Office of Instruction. All Canvas course sites should have an official syllabus imported as a file within a module or as a link at the top of the Syllabus page (located in the left menu).

STEP 2: Order Books On Time
Submit orders for textbooks and course readers through the SRC Bookstore as early as possible. This will permit bookstore staff to procure accessible versions of these materials.

STEP 3: Submit "Reserve" Material to Library
Submit course reading materials through the SRC librarian in a timely fashion. This will permit library staff to ensure that these materials are accessible.

STEP 4: Make Your Course Material Accessible
Follow accessibility guidelines to ensure that your text-based or online course documents, handouts, or slides are accessible. See the Creating Accessible Documents section for more information.

STEP 5: Make Your A/V Material Accessible
For non-print media course materials, add captions to your video or transcripts for your audio materials. For questions about this process, please see the Closed Captioning of Videos section and/or contact Lisa Dennis, Director of Academic Support (lisa.dennis@src.edu).

STEP 6: Contact Disability Services (if needed)
If you are notified that you have a student with a documented disability, please contact Disability Services for any questions or concerns regarding accommodations or refer to the DSS Faculty Handbook
